Sardinia
is a country preferred
by millions of people
as a holiday target,
but it is also in the
sense of many well-known diving
competitions. The motives
of this success are
clear; the morphology
is very different and
form a contrast of the
coasts, the immovable
frame and its long beautiful beaches,
set in beads in the
semerald-green gleam,
here is the sea still
very rich of life: the
sponges and the gorgonies
form a carpet at its
walls, groupers, moraines,
octopus and in
the season populate
the fast robbers the
spaces, during in darken
for storages quite small
and colored "Nudibranchi",
transparent shrimps
and indescribable cancers hide
themselves. This liquid
surface hides valuable
and sparkling jewleries
in its antinode bulge
innumerable: We speak
of sunk wrecks, fantasmn
in the course of the
years, often centuries
ago. There are many
in Sardinia, but if
one liked to remain
in a limited space,
if you are diving in
the gulf of Cagliari,
or going then toward
Teulada. One meets a
cargo ship, into
only 18 meters of depth,
the remnand of the ENTELLA,
ISONZO, a warship approx.
56 meters; EGLE, sink
of a submarine during
the Second World War; ROMAGNA,
admits for its large
sea-eels, which inhabit
the hull; DINO, before
approx. 20 years the
italian ship sunk into
stormy sea. Many motives
for an underwater photographer, who
can play with the back
lights, which form between
the steel hawsers and
the fish, which often
approximate and hope
on bitebite bites. Now,
here is our small leader,
that in-vites you to
an attendance into this
world of the witnesses
of a past always misteriosly.
ENTELLA
We begin our journey
under the wrecks Sardinia
with something simple,
but in each case very
beautifully, the Entella.
It was a freighter,
which transported coal
and by an English submarine
1943 was sunk. Beautiful
history, the submarine's
one, which in only one
year of war and in a
small sea paragraph,
as that of the gulf
of Cagliari brought immense
losses. But we turn
back to us
and the Entella; approx.
30 meters long and in
the post-war period
very destroyed, it was
taken apart piece for
piece. Therefore a ship
school of the skin divers
of the first generation,
in addition, for the
beginners in a depth
of 15 meters and who
begins with that snorkels.
Upright it is situated
on sand. From this
the always good view
and always clear water
follow: optimal conditions.
Perhaps only a little
cold: the water temperature
oscillates from 12 to
18 degrees. But
almost there are never
currents, and if there
are, not too strongly,
only with Scirocco and
mistral hoists. And
a further large advantage
that the wreck is only
5 minutes with
the boat of the beach
in Solanas (starting
point for this diving
route). Let's talk about
fish: Not very much
is to be found, but
you can find quite Saraghi, Trigle,
Nudibranchi, octopus
eggs. And at
night, the surprise:
Alica mirabilis, in
its whole splendour
unfolds.
ENTELLA
place:
gulf of Cagliari, Solanas
wreck:Freighter, transported
coal. The wreck is rather
destroyed. It is in
upright position on
sandig, stony background.
Depth: 15 meters of
water temperature: 12
to 18 degrees
currents: not strongly
diving: on the Entella
you find each type of
underwater life and
it is a optimal workstation
for the diving photography.
A night diving course
is recommended, with
which the Alica mirabilis
can be seen.
Distance from the coast:
approx. 100 meters
ISONZO
We
began with the hors-d'oeuvre
the Entella and are
going immediately to ISONZO
to the first plate of
the meal. The large
warship (approx. 80
m) has the same past
of the Entella and the
Romagna behind. It was
sunk by the same English
submarine in the gulf
of Cagliari. The diving
course is here somewhat
more complex, since
the wreck is in a depth
of 56 meters, a place
with strong currents
very often. But the
view is indescribable:
there are days by those
starting from 15 to
20 meters underneath
the water surface can
detect the outlines
of the ship. That depends
on the currents. The
stay is safe if the
mistral and the scirocco
wind. We find the currents
in 20 to 25 meters of
depth, then no more.
So you have the account
and the desire to dive
deeper and you can be
sure, once at the wreck
concerned to be able
to further execute a
calm normal diving course
without currents.
In any case you should
be an experienced diver,
in order to execute
a diving course of this
type, also because a
long decompression must
be made. The base of
the Isonzo is
on 56 meters of depth
on sandy ground, but
starting from 45
meters one sees already
very much. A roundabout
of a few fish frequent
this wreck. If one dives
into the engine room
(under largest caution)
begins the show: moved
fish masses and clouds,
and the diver... an
unforgettable experience.
And to the end information:
the ship wreck is characterized
by a buoy, whose attachment
line can be used also
very well for the decompression.
ISONZO
place: gulf of Cagliari,
Torre delle Stelle wreck: large warship
1943 sinks, being on
the page on sandy ground.
Depth: 56 meters
Water temperature: 10
to 14 degrees
currents: strong currents,
from 0 to 30 meters
with muck ral and Sciroccowind.
Diving: One can dive
into the engine room
under largest caution.
Two cannons and machine
guns are on the deck.
Distance from the coast:
1.5 miles.
EGLE
Carring
on our underwater expedition
on the hunt for ship
wrecks in the gulf of
Cagliari with the EGLE.
Also this ship was sunk
by the same English
submarine, which had
already some in front
of its cannons. The
Egle was a cargo
ship and had loaded
coal, on this refers
at least the remnants,
but this is not safe.
It was armed with self-defense
weapons, which were
not sufficient in this
case. In case of the
heavy gun-fire it is
very destroyed, but
it is nevertheless
an object valuable for
exciting diving excursion.
One can dive in very
simply way at the side
of the trunk, inside
it, however with largest
caution. These are recommendations,
which should be absolutely
kept. And this
wreck is in a good fishing
zone covered with nets
the most dangerous at
all for a diver at wrecks.
But one does not have
problems with currents
and it prevails
a outstanding view.
It is a rich fish area,
and there is available
many fish, which impress
the underwater photographer
for sure. Attention,
some fish was already
observed, when they
attacked divers, which
simply went too close
to it near-dared themselves.
EGLE
place: gulf of Cagliari
Capo Boi
wreck: Freighter sinks
of an English submarine.
It is in upright position
on sandy seaground.
Depth: 36 meters
diving: The wreck is
very destroyed, but
between the steel hawsers
one finds many interesting
things. One can dive
into the hull of the
wreck.
Water temperature: 10
to 15 degrees
currents: Not very strongly
with mistral and Scirocco
wind.
Distance from the coast:
approx. 2 miles
besides we find us here
in a zone, in which
diving is forbidden.
Therefore you need to
consult the local diving
center, which have a
special permission.
ROMAGNA
We
are in Capitana, still
in the gulf of Cagliari,
over to dive down to
a very beautiful wreck
in this zone, the ROMAGNA.
Unfortunately also the
Romagna finished as
the other ships Entella,
Isonzo and the Egle,
and it sunk by the famous
english submarine 1943.
The trunk broke into
two sections, and today
the bug of the ship
is situated approx.
one mile away from the
trunk and offers thereby
another dipping target.
The loading of the Romagna
was gasoline and
weapons, it was equipped
with light weapons for
self-defense. When the
crew of the ship noticed,
to be sought out and
pursued by the Englishmen,
they tried to bring
the ship in security
by escape. This didn't succeed
however, when it was
done the ship broke
into two sections and
the bug sank immediately,
the remaining part of
the ship swam still
on the water to the
place where it sunk
and situated today.
With a length of approx.
50 meters it is
in a depth from approximately
34 to 42 meters in upright
Position, not destroyed,
i.e. kept still good.
One can dive into the
engine room and other
areas of the trunk (with
largest precaution)
and finds practically
all sea animals and
many fishshoals also
here. With much luck
one meets also Delfines.
In the trunk inside
are still boots and
other articles of equipment
of the crew. An
indescribable dipping.
ROMAGNA
place: gulf of Cagliari,
Capitana
wreck: The Romagna was
loaded with weapons
as supply. It is on
sandy sea-ground in
upright position.
Depth: 34 to 42 meters
currents: Strongly with
mistral and sciroccowind
water temperature: 10
to 15 degrees
diving: very good conditions,
the large bug is missing
, one can dive into
the wreck inside, very
rich of sea animals.
ROMAGNA
(THE BUG)
we
going to investigate
the bug of the Romagna.
As said before already,
is it one mile away
from the other part
of the ship. Here
we are deeper, on approx.
45 meters. The diving
course is something
more complex thereby,
but nothing is impossible.
Strong currents are
only with mistral wind
and the sandy sea-ground
whirls up much mud and
worsen the clearly
view. If one expects
the wreck section achieved
a wealth of various
fish shoals, crustaceans,
one believes to dive
in the Caribbean sea,
but don't know where
to look.
ROMAGNA
place: gulf of Cagliari,
Capitana
wreck: The bug is approx.
a mile of mainhurries
the wreck far away.
Depth: 45 meters
diving: the wreck section
is surrounded by very
many fish shoals, partly
also
large attained full growth,
which are from time
to time fed of the diver.
Currents: strongly with
mistral and sciroccowind.
Water temperatures:
10 to 15 degrees.
DINO
We
go far toward Teulada
to Punta Zafferano (Capo
Teulada), where in 25
meters depth the DINO
is situated. An Italian ship,
which in the year 1973
during a storm sank.
She had loaded tone.
It is on sandy sea-ground
easily bent to the side.
One can dive into different
areas of the ship and
finds also tracks of
articles of equipment.
The ship had very long masts,
which were shortened
later by NATO, because
in this area NATO exercises
take place. If one dives
into the trunk,
one sees numerous sea
inhabitants, among other
things the sea turtle
"Caretta caretta
", which probably reproduces
itself at the beach
of "Porto Zafferano".
Some information to
the diving course: In
this zone the admission and
navigation with watervehicels
is militarily forbidden.
In the summer only in
the months July and
August are free for tourists.
Before each diveing
however the Capitaneria
(coast guard) is to
be informed, in order
to get a permission.
It excludes annoyance
with the authorities
and the military in
any case.
DINO
place: Capo Teulada
Porto Zafferano
wreck: Italian cargo
ship with tone load,
sunk 1973 during a strong
storm. In upright position
easily bent to the side
on sandy seaground
depth: 25 meters
water temperature: 10
to 15 degrees
currents: strongly with
Libeccio wind
diving: very good status
of the wreck, much fish
for our underwater photographers
inside the interior.
